Overmedicating of Children in Foster Care

Children in foster care are 13 times more likely to be medicated with powerful psychotropic drugs than children not in foster care. According to a new federal report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), there have even been instances where doctors prescribed doses beyond what the Food and Drug Administration have approved.

As a CASA volunteer in Harris County, Texas, I have witnessed this first hand – Teenagers who are on at least two different powerful psychotropic medications, but are not receiving consistent therapeutic services.

I agree with Senator Thomas Carper, who called for the GAO investigation, when he says, “We need to get to the bottom of this and do the best that we can to stop it, not just the Congress, not just the doctors, not just the states. All of us together.”

I was a foster child in the state of california and this happened to me and all the other foster children I lived with. Our conditions were often misdiagnosed so I was medicated for conditions I did not really have. I would also be on like four different types of behavioral medications at a time..types and doses always changing. I am pretty sure I have been permanently affected by this.
